A major dilemma

What do you want to be today? A doctor yesterday, a veterinarian today, and maybe a teacher tomorrow? If you are having a difficult time deciding on a college major, you are not alone. In fact, I have good news for you! The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota has a great group of highly skilled and dedicated academic advisers and career counselors to help you focus your career path.

One student, like yourself, was set on her idea of becoming a doctor. However, her first-year experience in CEHD opened her eyes to new talents and interests that she had never even thought to consider before.

"Your first year at the U is one of the most important years in college—it sets the tone for the rest of your college career," explains former first-year student, Brittany Lynch.

No more mac & cheese, please!

Is "money management" a foreign concept to you? Is your idea of washing clothes just throwing everything into one overstuffed load of both darks and lights? Or how about your cooking skills? Are they limited to dumping a box of noodles into boiling water and adding cheese from a packet?

If these traits currently describe your domestic skills, are you still questioning why your parents are worried to send you off to college on your own?!? Well, worry no more (or at least less) because the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is here to help you improve your independent lifestyle in healthy ways!

Final Destination: Graduation

Are you feeling stressed while finishing up your rigorous high school courses and college planning? Read one University of Minnesota professor's perspective on the culmination of it all--graduation day.

Letter of the day: Graduation day is a moment when dreams come true.
-Star Tribune Opinion Letters

This is the season of graduations at the University of Minnesota. When I step out of our building, I see families with joy on their faces walking toward Northrop Auditorium. I see mothers and fathers, younger and older siblings, and even grandparents all walking toward Northrop. They are attending the graduation of their brother or sister, or son or daughter, or grandson or granddaughter.

This is a day that mothers and fathers dreamt about when their child was born; they planned for this day all those years when their child was growing up and going to school, and they probably had to put aside money to pay for it all. But today-- today is graduation, the culmination of it all. Today their child becomes a person to be reckoned with, a professional, someone who will change the world.

For me, a professor, this is the happiest time of the academic year, for I had a small part in these graduates' educations. I, too, am proud of them and wish them well.

What are your strengths?

"We believe each individual has a group of talents within them, that when combined with knowledge and skills, help develop their strenghts. This awareness helps them achieve success and progress. Additionally, we believe that becoming aware of strengths improves confidence and builds a basis for achievement."

-Anthony Albecher, CEHD academic adviser

As part of the CEHD community, I participated in the college's Strengths Quest myself. I now know what my individual strengths are and am constantly improving my ability to work with my strengths.

My Strengths:

1. Adaptability
2. Includer
3. Positivity
4. Woo
5. Communication

So, what are your strenghts? In your first-year inquiry course this fall, you will be identifying your individual strengths and how to best utilize them. Read more about how the College of Education and Human Development is building leaders by reading the full CEHD Connect article.
