A major dilemma

What do you want to be today? A doctor yesterday, a veterinarian today, and maybe a teacher tomorrow? If you are having a difficult time deciding on a college major, you are not alone. In fact, I have good news for you! The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota has a great group of highly skilled and dedicated academic advisers and career counselors to help you focus your career path.

No more mac & cheese, please!

Is "money management" a foreign concept to you? Is your idea of washing clothes just throwing everything into one overstuffed load of both darks and lights? Or how about your cooking skills? Are they limited to dumping a box of noodles into boiling water and adding cheese from a packet?

If these traits currently describe your domestic skills, are you still questioning why your parents are worried to send you off to college on your own?!? Well, worry no more (or at least less) because the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is here to help you improve your independent lifestyle in healthy ways!

A recent Star Tribune article discusses ways in which the U of M is taking steps to educate college students living on their own through classes. The course topics range from personal relationships, ways to stay out of credit card debt, to cooking class with nutrition majors in your own apartment! Final Destination: Graduation

Are you feeling stressed while finishing up your rigorous high school courses and college planning? Read one University of Minnesota professor's perspective on the culmination of it all--graduation day.

Letter of the day: Graduation day is a moment when dreams come true.
-Star Tribune Opinion Letters

This is the season of graduations at the University of Minnesota. When I step out of our building, I see families with joy on their faces walking toward Northrop Auditorium. I see mothers and fathers, younger and older siblings, and even grandparents all walking toward Northrop. They are attending the graduation of their brother or sister, or son or daughter, or grandson or granddaughter.

This is a day that mothers and fathers dreamt about when their child was born; they planned for this day all those years when their child was growing up and going to school, and they probably had to put aside money to pay for it all. But today-- today is graduation, the culmination of it all. Today their child becomes a person to be reckoned with, a professional, someone who will change the world.

For me, a professor, this is the happiest time of the academic year, for I had a small part in these graduates' educations. I, too, am proud of them and wish them well.

What are your strengths?

"We believe each individual has a group of talents within them, that when combined with knowledge and skills, help develop their strenghts. This awareness helps them achieve success and progress. Additionally, we believe that becoming aware of strengths improves confidence and builds a basis for achievement."

-Anthony Albecher, CEHD academic adviser

As part of the CEHD community, I participated in the college's Strengths Quest myself. I now know what my individual strengths are and am constantly improving my ability to work with my strengths.

My Strengths:

1. Adaptability
2. Includer
3. Positivity
4. Woo
5. Communication

So, what are your strenghts? In your first-year inquiry course this fall, you will be identifying your individual strengths and how to best utilize them. Read more about how the College of Education and Human Development is building leaders by reading the full CEHD Connect article.

Meet Jordan, CEHD student ambassador

My name is Jordan and I'm a sophomore in the College or Education and Human Development (CEHD). I am double majoring in Human Resource Development and Business and Marketing Education with double minors in Human Resources and Industrial Relations and Business Management from the Carlson School of Management.

I chose the University of Minnesota because I wanted to go to a large university within an urban environment where the opportunities are endless and there is an abundance of different cultures and diversity. The Twin Cities is one of my favorite metropolitan areas and I wanted to be far away from home without having to move across the country. The strong academic programs that the University is known for played a huge role in my decision as well.

I love the large variety of extracurricular opportunities that the U of M provides. I am currently involved as an Admissions Ambassador, leading campus tours for prospective students visiting the U of M. I am also involved with a student group for Human Resource Development majors called the Human Resource Development Organization. I hold two marketing internships as well. One is a sports marketing and promotions internship with Gopher Sports, and I am also a marketing intern for University Dining Services.

I love CEHD because it is filled with great classes that embrace sutdent-teacher relationships and allow for interaction and discussion with classmates. These aspects truly enhance my learning, compared to sitting in a lecture hall just taking notes. My favorite CEHD class that I've had was HRD 3201: Training and Development. My teacher has a lot of real life experience to facilitate her teaching and it really makes the students engaged because they are learning valuable, relevant information. She breaks the class up into groups for discussion about many key concepts and it makes class seem to go by quickly and it doesn't even feel like we're learning, however, when I reflect on all the information I've learned, it is shocking!

The College of Education and Human Development is a unique place where students and professors have exceptional relationships, and people are driven and passionate about what they want to do.

(And it's completely free to full-time students!) Soon, the Rec Center will be expanding their already state-of-the-art facilities.

Inspiring Teachers- Who inspires you?

Dee McLellan graduated from the University of Minnesota with aspirations of being an effective teacher. Like many students interested in teaching as a career, Dee was originally inspired by a teacher who taught her in the fifth grade. This teacher showed her the importance of learning through current events like space launches.

Now, Dee serves as an inspirational teacher herself and has been featured in NASA's educational website for inspiring teachers. This Minnesota teacher combined her love of learning and science to teach others. Visit NASA's website to learn more about Dee's experiences with her students in science, teaching, and getting hands on opportunities with NASA's impressive facilities.

CEHD Research

Research used to mean to me wearing goggles and using a test tube, but my experience at the University of Minnesota opened my eyes to wide variety of possibilities. Just think, playing a game like "Dance, Dance, Revolution" can actually contribute to research! One university study through the kinesiology department used the game to research if it is a good alternative exercise for children to reduce childhood obesity.

Kinesiology is not the only deparment doing research, check out our different research centers and labs on campus for our CEHD majors! Research is a great way to get involved on campus and to learn more about current advancements in your field of interest.

Don't forget to give me a call or email me if you have more questions! 612-324-8765 or lear0030@umn.edu.

CEHD Ambassadors: Caity Sweet

This guest post is written by College of Education and Human Development ambassador and current student Caity Sweet.

Hi! I'm a Kinesiology major in CEHD and am in the Clinical Movement Science sub-plan along with a minor in Psychology. I hope to attend Physical Therapy school after graduation. The Kinesiology program at the U of M was a big draw to me because the program has a very strong curriculum and has so many opportunities. I love injuries; fixing them is like putting together an intricate puzzle, so Kinesiology was a natural fit for me.

The Kinesiology program has so many interesting classes like sport and exercies psychology and exercise physicology. There is also room within the major to complete your prerequisite courses for graduate school too, which is really nice. When choosing a college, I knew I wanted to get away from home. I'm from Waukesha, Wisc., but I also did not want to be too far away either. The U of M is far enough away from home, but close enough to go home for a weekend. The resources and opportunities avaiblable in the Twin Cities are endless...yet another reason I chose the University.

I really love being a student in CEHD. Everyone in the college is passionate about what they do and encourages you to get involved. Getting involved makes a community for you on campus and also makes the University seem so much smaller. I'm currently serving as an officer for the Pre-Physical Therapy Club. It's a great way to connect with people who have similar interests. I also have an internship with the athletic medicine department. As a student athletic trainer in the Bierman Athletic Complex, I have the opportunity to work with athletes from many different sports and see a wide range of injuries. I also get a lot of hands-on experience with sports injuries and rehabilitation programs.

I recently returned form a s study abroad experience in Greece and Turkey. I went through Arcadia University's College of Global Studeis Summer in Greece program for six weeks. It was a field-based course and we were very rarely in the classroom. I took two courses that fulfilled the last of my liberal education graduation requirements. Living in another part of the world has opened my eyes to other cultures and has taught me to appreicate what I have here; like air conditioning in 95-degree weather and being able to flush toilet paper! But my favorite part of the trip by far was the four-day trip we took to the island of Santorini. The island is known for its sunsets and didn't disappoint! While we were there, the New Acropolis Museum opened so we were able to be some of the first people to see it.

Through my study abroad experience, I was able to acquire an internship with the Learning Abroad Center. As part of the Global Ambassadors Internship program, we learn how to use our study abroad experience to our advantage and also help others plan their experiences. Being in CEHD, I've had nothing but wonderful experiences and doors opened for me that I never thought were possible.
